Teacher’s Day

Hi Everyone,

I think I have spoken to most of you, but in case I haven’t, I wanted to say a big big thank you for hosting such an amazing and inspirational day last Friday. It was a truly spectacular day spent in school.

I know that many times we get so hung up in school about assessments and deadlines but it’s important for you know that there is a reason for my choice to be in this profession. As many of you know I changed career about 3 years ago from a human resource consultant in the corporate world to the teaching profession. And to this day, I do not regret my decision one bit. Yes, there are ‘those’ days when I question my sanity but never once have I ever ever considered changing jobs again or quitting.

The reason for this conviction is each of you. Some of you may be smirking wondering how in the world that is possible when you hear me hounding you day after day incessantly. But really, I love waking up in the mornings (ok, this is a slight exaggeration), coming to school, chatting with you, hanging out with you and teaching you. When we have discussions in the classroom, laugh together and motivate each other, THAT makes my day.

So on the ocassion of teacher’s day, I thank each and everyone of you for making my life special.

Plagiarism

So, if you’ve ever attended my classes, you’ll know how particular I am about plagiarism. Take a look at the attached article from NY Times. The era of cut-copy-paste irritates me no end for no other reason that it’s the easy way out. Plagiarism for me equates to insecurity – the feeling that others will always have better or smarter ideas. Sometimes they do, but is it possible for me to believe that I can take it one step further and provide my own interpretation that makes it MY idea? In this digital age, its become so much easier to just take ideas without knowing that we are. And it all really comes down to providing the appropriate acknowledgements! Easy and yet so hard to do! http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/02/education/02cheat.html?_r=1&th&emc=th

Back to School

BACK TO SCHOOL!!!

Well, it’s back to school! For some of you, the beginning of your venture into the IB world and for some of you, your final year of high school.

It was great seeing all of you again and sure hope you managed to rejuvenate during summer break. I spent the summer getting my Master’s in Education Degree. I had to write, well type, a 4 hour essay-based paper and that has seriously helped me realize what you guys go through. So I promise we’ll spend time this year focusing on how to tackle long essay based papers.

Let’s make this year a good one!
